 Poaceae or Gramineae (Grasses)

Globally, these are the most important cause of hay fever in Spain and the rest of Europe due to the high allergenic potential of their pollens and their wide distribution. Although there are several thousand species, their importance to allergology is centred on a small number of species capable of producing large quantities of airborne pollen. The grasses have an extended period of pollen production which lasts between 6 and 10 months due to the diversity of the species (each with its particular time of flowering) and to the climatic conditions; the most intens period in Spain is in the months of May and June. A cross reaction with peach is often found, presenting as immediate oropharyngeal itching after contact with peach skin or flesh (the oral allergy syndrome).
