Plantago (Plantain)

The most common species are the Plantago lanceolata (Hoary plantain, in the photo), the Plantago major (Greater plantain) and Plantago lagopus . As with the grasses, pollenisation occurs in May-June, though the atmospheric concentrations are much lower. Positive skin tests to the pollen are often found but, in general, only in patients who are also sensitised to the grasses and, consequently, their importance as a cause of hay fever symptoms has not been fully defined. Some patients sensitised to this pollen have presented anaphylaxis after taking laxative preparations based on Plantago ovata.
