Artemisia (Wormwood)

This is one of the most important causes of hay fever in September in many regions of Europe, including Spain (particularly Murcia). The most common species is Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) and patients allergic to its pollen may develop intense conjunctivitis on washing the eyes with camomile infusions due to a cross-reaction with the with the pollen of Matricaria chamomilla also found in the infusion. Cross reactions are also frequently found with celery, causing oropharyngeal itching (oral allergy syndrome).
