Alnus glutinoa (alders)

The alder ( Alnus glutinosa ) grows on the banks of rivers, streams and freshwater courses. They prefer low-calcium soils and can survive in very poor soils due to the ability of their roots to fix atmospheric nitrogen. They are not found in the Balearic isles but otherwise they are found throughout most of the peninsula, particularly in the northern and western regions, from the Pyrenees to the Tarifa mountains and Algeciras in Cadiz. Their period of pollination in Spain is from January to March, maximal in February. They are a cause of hay fever in the north of Spain and, due to the cross reaction with Betula (Birch), pollinating in April, causes a prolongation of the period of hay fever symptoms in those patients allergic to the latter
