Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae:

(photo: Salsola sp, Saltwort)

Salsola

These are mostly weeds, very resistant to drought and which thrive in dry, saline soils. Flowers may be found almost throughout the year due to the different flowering seasons of the various species, though the highest atmospheric concentrations occur in the summer months (July-September). In a study recently carried out by the SEAIC, species of Chenopodium and/or Salsola were considered to be the principal source of pollen sensitisation in Elche and Toledo, the second in Logroño, the third in Ciudad Real and Zaragoza and the fourth in Malaga and Seville; and it was precisely these monitoring stations which registered the highest counts for these types of pollen.
